Skincare Routine
We all know we need a skincare routine, but it may get confusing when considering the necessary products and how long we should spend on each step. The order in which you apply your products is critical because incorrect usage or layering could render the products ineffective or irritate your skin.
We all probably know that cleansing your face means washing, moisturizing means hydrating your skin, and treating is to target problem areas. Treating can also include products that pack a nutritional punch, like powerful antioxidants and vitamin C.
Below you will find a step-by-step guide for your morning and nighttime regime, which product to use first, and how many minutes you should leave between steps.
Â
1.- Cleanser: Face cleansing clears impurities and excess oil that can clog pores. I recommend a sulfate and soap-free cleanser that is gentle to the face. The best formulas will remove excess dirt and not strip it from healthy oils. At least 30 seconds to a minute should be massaging your cleanser into your face. Spend more time massaging your oiliest areas, such as the T-zone; after your face is thoroughly cleansed, rinse with warm water and prepare for the next step.
2.- Toner: Now that your face is clean, it's time to apply toner. A good toner can brighten your complexion, hydrate, tighten pores, and balance your skin's pH. This product is designed to replenish the skin through hydration and remove dead cells and dirt. Look for toners that have witch hazel, alcohol-free, glycerin, and aloe vera juice. This step should only take about 30 seconds or as long as it takes to wipe your entire face and neck. Use a moderate amount on a cotton pad and wipe away!
3.- Serum: Serums deliver concentrated amounts of powerful ingredients that address issues like dark spots, wrinkles, and fine lines. Some serums can be used in the morning, but most are ideal for nighttime. The amount of time spent applying serum should only be as long as it takes you to smooth the product over your whole face (and neck, for those who enjoy extra oomph). 4- Eye Cream or Eye Serum: Make sure to choose a product specially made for the skin around the eyes. The skin around the eyes is very delicate and ages faster than the rest of your face. Eye serum targets dark circles, wrinkles, and puffiness. Lightly dab your product around your eyes; the application time should be 30 seconds or less.
5.- Spot Treatment: It is essential to treat your spots with products that reduce inflammation and calm the area while avoiding infection. Avoid using spot treatment on open wounds. Depending on the size and quantities of blemishes, the time spent on this step should be around 15 seconds. Skip this step if you have no blemishes.
6.- Moisturizer: Now you are ready to apply your moisturizer to your face and neck. This product ensures your skin stays soft and hydrated while improving elasticity and reducing fine lines. Dermatologists recommend using a face cream for all skin types, which can be used day and night. Massage the cream as you apply it to increase its effectiveness and absorption. On average, it takes between 1 to 2 minutes or, at the very least, until your skin does not feel tacky to touch.
7.- Sunscreen: This step will take the longest and must be done with the utmost care. The sun is the main reason skin ages faster and may cause skin cancer. Smooth a nickel-sized dollop of SPF 30 or higher on your face, neck, and any area with sun exposure. One of my favorites is this Supergoop Unseen Sunscreen that doubles as a primer. It should take about a minute or two to apply, and you should wait at least 10 minutes before applying make-up and 30 minutes before heading outside.
Â
Your nighttime routine may take a little longer if you apply masks, peels, or a facial roller. Remember to wait 10 minutes before laying on your pillow to let your products thoroughly seep into your skin.
Â
Good things come to those who wait, and that is especially true when using skincare products. Be patient, and don't expect results overnight. You should start seeing results within 6-12 weeks. The most important thing is to create a routine that works for you and stick to it!
