To better understand, there are three layers to your skin, the thin top layer (epidermis), a thick middle layer (dermis), and a bottom layer (subcutaneous fat). Each layer has its role. The middle layer is home to sebaceous glands that produce oils and keep your skin hydrated and soft. This oil is called sebum, and it helps the skin retain moisture.
The skin often works in perfect harmony, but sometimes it may need some help to replenish what is lost. That is where skincare comes into play. A good skincare routine is not only for enhancing your appearance but also serves a functional purpose.
With consumers moving away from processed products and unhealthy ingredients in processed products, natural oils have grown in popularity. People struggle to find additive-free, affordable, and effective products. We will cover some of the best oils for your skin and their benefits here.
Natural oils have been used for centuries, and many skin types can benefit from them. Coconut oil, marula oil, argan oil, and avocado oil are helpful because they contain high levels of oleic acid (what makes oils thicker and richer). Jojoba, grapeseed, and argan oil are lighter and can absorb more quickly. These are best for acne-prone skin. All oils have a primary goal, which is to seal in moisture. - Coconut Oil is found in coconuts; it is high in saturated fat and is solid at room temperature. It is sweet-smelling and is used in everything from skincare to yummy recipes. Coconut oil is absorbs easily into the skin and is known for its antibacterial, antifungal, and anti-inflammatory properties. It is ideal for preventing moisture loss in the skin. If you are acne-prone, this oil is not recommendable as it is comedogenic and may cause breakouts. However, cold-pressed, unrefined coconut oil is safe on other parts of your body.
- Olive Oil- High in vitamins A, D, E, and K and acts as a moisturizer. This oil doesn't typically activate allergies, and the most recommended olive oil is extra virgin. Its consistency is heavy and is best for all body applications.
- Jojoba Oil- This oil is native to Mexico and American Southwest. It is extracted from its seeds and used medicinally by Native American Tribes. Actually Jojoba oil is not an oil at all but is made of liquid wax esters, which help prevent water loss. It can treat various types of dermatitis, from acne to psoriasis, and it has anti-inflammatory properties, among other skin benefits.
- Argan Oil- High in Vitamin E and omega fatty acids, which boast antioxidant properties and help moisturize skin. Argan oil is extracted from the nuts of the Moroccan argan tree and is soothing for all skin types. It is light and non-greasy, making it ideal to use daily, under make-up, and at night. Other benefits of using argan oil include improving skin elasticity, fighting free radicals, and leaving your skin glowing.
- Rosehip Seed Oil- Extracted from the seeds of wild rose bushes, rosehip seed oil has seen a surge in popularity. Personally one of my favorites because of its anti-aging properties. This oil is a powerful nourisher and helps alleviate inflammatory conditions such as eczema. Rosehip seed oil is rich in fatty acids, Vitamins E, C, and D, and beta-carotene. The benefits are:
- Skin protection and hydration.
- Reducing wrinkles and fine lines.
- Reducing dark circles.
- Correcting dark spots.
- Restoring elasticity.
- Almond Oil- Extracted from, well, you guessed it, almonds, almond oil is full of health benefits, such as vitamin E, zinc, proteins, and potassium. It is light in texture and has a sweet smell, making it an excellent choice to include in your facial skincare routine.
- Grapeseed Oil- Popular in cooking, this oil doubles as a product you can use on your skin. It is rich in omega fatty acids and has anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antimicrobial properties. Great as a skin moisturizer, so make sure you look for skincare products that include this oil.
Face oils may be one of the best-kept beauty secrets throughout centuries. They absorb in your skin quickly and deliver moisture and nourishing properties to your skin instantly.
